Balenciaga Resort 2014Resort 2014 Paris

Runway Review

Alexander Wang's debut Resort Collection for Balenciaga is inspired by a trip that Alexander Wang took with his design team to the coastal town of Spain Guetaria-where Cristobal Balenciaga was born and where his museum carries some of the legendary master's work.

This particular collection is reminiscing of Cristobal's couture collections in a more subtle way as interpreted by Alexander Wang with a consistent use of monostatic black and white which has always been in the DNA of the House of Balenciaga.

The use of Geometry in the archival pieces that Wang observed can be cleary seen with an elaborate construction of pieces that are more softened with less rigor creating a more elaborate approach to handmade couture tailoring.

The brilliant executed attention to the details for this particular collection is seen in the peanut-shaped Czech hand cut glass beads that is bound in the way that ball gown dresses were made and protected with bounds of muslin, ruffles broken at the hem of long pencil skirts or to the long crepe dresses and the use of polka dots -which was beloved by Cristobal Balenciaga himself.

This is a true work of another master in Alexander Wang's craftsmanship.
