Runway Review

BCBGMAXAZRIA is still celebrating its 25th anniversary - a year-long fête that started with the brand's Fall 2014 collection in February. Over two decades in business is no small feat, but the Azrias’ success is cemented in their formula: an always effortless blend of functionality, trend, and glamour. The brand's runway collections are where experimentation takes root - rich textiles, unexpected silhouettes, and electrifying use of color.

"Transcending" was the inspiration for BCBGMAXAZRIA's Spring 2015 assortment where the models literally seemed to float down the runway – en route to a chic garden party or stylish outdoor event. The opening look channeled supreme and effortless femininity: a soft-hued dress with a plunging neckline, bow belt lightly cinching the waist, a slight peplum accent, and a thigh-high side slit for another peek of skin. That ensemble gave way to floral print prairie-inspired frocks, suede peep-toe booties (the brand’s ever-present wearable mission being achieved), drawstring-detailed culottes, and more languid numbers continuing the offerings’ dreamy Spring palette. What the brand does best is deliver looks that women not only want to, but can wear and as each ensemble made its turn down the runway, nothing felt out of reach or unattainable – a matter of grave importance in a retail climate in which fast fashion dominates and serves as a bridge between high-fashion and reality.

Longer shorts were a priority and a nod to functionality as the style works perfectly for that transition between work and play, as well as the first crisp days of Spring through to balmier temperatures. The length fluidly shifted between bermuda and capri and was injected with ladylike flair when paired with intricately embroidered halter tops and vacation-ready tunics. The variations were aplenty from striped with oversized pockets to silk with a faint abstract print and drawstring for an athletic-inspired feel. The thin obi-inspired belt also had a moment in almost every look on display – serving its purpose on an embellished white halter gown fit for next year’s brides to a ribbed cap-sleeve vest that added to the collection’s smattering of edgy points.

Azria really had fun with florals and light layers: both of which are expected of the season. Wispy maxi dresses made a statement in baby blue, fuchsia, and tangerine-littered patterns, but did so in a way that echoed elegance and refinement. In essence, the pieces were unabashedly and undeniably pretty: the kind that turns heads, but is still substantive. A sheer sleeve here and a keyhole detail there were infused in doses for a sophisticated flash of sexiness just when things seemed to get a bit too saccharine. As temperatures in New York City skim the 90-degree mark, these looks could easily translate from the runway to real-time – giving the BCBG woman an idea of where and how she would wear the pieces long before they hit stores.

To hark back to the brand’s inspiration, the word “transcend” also carries with it the notion of surpassing former achievements and with 25 years under the company’s belt, I’d say the brand can only go onward and upwards from here.
