Carolina HerreraSpring Summer 2015 New York

Carolina Herrera was inspired by some old friends for Spring: flowers. She's always had a penchant for them and they streamed through the collection - whether for day or night the classic print was present. The brand made them modern and fresh juxtaposing them against large bands that gradated in color.

A crop top and high-waist skirt combination opened the show, followed by two gowns: Herrera specializes in the business of pretty and she intended to make that clear out of the gate. The assortment then took a solid turn, in white, coral, and lemon. A round-collared jacket, tank, and loose trousers were the most casual the brand aimed to get, while a skirt suit with elbow-length sleeves demonstrated her commitment to ladies who lunch.

When florals returned, they were both pleasant and powerful: a reference to the modern-day woman without a doubt. Pink and white vinca minors were given edge against a black background on a transition-ready coat and an on-trend short sleeve crop top and maxi skirt duo, while white roses were placed side by side with a grey-tone iteration of the aforementioned gradient band on a flirty sleeveless frock and a cropped blouse layered under a mini skirt suit.

What was most appreciated was Herrera's devotion to youthful dressing: not a given considering her customer base skews more toward the conservative. Coveted crop top and skirt sets, functional and minimalist separates, and metal embellishment demonstrated that outfitting the young and stylish set is on the brand's agenda and these pieces will definitely pull in some new fans.

A Herrera collection would be incomplete with red carpet-ready attire and those were a tour de force in bright and blurred florals, tile mosaic detailing, and full skirts for supreme femininity. She stepped out of her niche this time around and exhibited the kind of buoyant spirit the season calls for. The designs were exciting and often contemporary - an unforeseen turn that yielded breathtaking results.
